This was our one “nice” meal during out trip to Disney and the surrounding area. Located in Huntington Beach, we met up with a friend here after we were unable to get reservations at two other sushi spots. Turned out to be a great thing. So glad we came here. It’s located in a large strip mall but this little unassuming spot serves up some creative and beautiful modern Japanese American fare.
We were eyeing the table next to us and decided to order one of the dishes they had. A large cucumber roll filled with salmon, tuna yellowtail and smelt eggs, the Paradise roll lived up to its name. The look of each dish was beautiful, like the yellowtail stuffed lobster — seared cuts of yellowtail wrapped around a creamy mixture of lobster. The flavor of each dish was equal to its appearance. The seared yellowtail with jalapeno and ponzu was another great showcase of fish, as was the spicy yellowtail roll. It was simple, but excellent with a minimal amount of well seasoned sushi rice enhancing the flavor of the fish. Not to be outdone by the dishes prior, the winter roll was a wonderful collection of flavors in a spring wrap. Rounding out the meal was an order of garlic edamame and a spicy tuna tartare dish with a crispy tempura eggplant slice serving as its base.
The place is also kid-friendly with a kid’s menu featuring a bento box of chicken terriyaki, rice, pot stickers, soup, and cookies. It was nice to find a spot where both kids and adults can eat quality food at reasonable prices.
We may have had to settle for coming here for dinner, but I’m glad it worked out that way. The relaxing atmosphere and beautifully executed food made me a believer and turned me into someone who will be a return customer.
