While having a disappointing and unsatisfying meal at Zentan, the couple dining next to us highly recommended Brasserie Beck. We were still hungry so we decided to check it out. We walked in and got a table right away on a Saturday night in the back part of the restaurant. We told our waiter that we were only going to get an appetizer and a dessert and he didn’t seem to mind that we wouldn’t be spending much.
We got a squash soup with (ham?) croquettes and bacon. It was beautifully presented with the croquettes and other ingredients stacked in a bowl and the squash soup poured tableside. There was no doubt after tasting it that it was the best thing we had eaten all night — far surpassing the mediocrity at Zentan. For dessert we had a great bread pudding with creme anglaise.
I only regret that we didn’t have a full dinner here. It would have been nice to try a few more dishes to see if they were as good as the soup and dessert we had. I’ll be sure to hit this place up again the next time I’m in town.
