The final truck I visited at the South Point Gourmet Food Truck Festival (11/5/11) in Las Vegas was Coolhaus. Thankfully it had a relatively short line — about a ten minute wait.
It’s got a great concept. Choose a cookie (among flavor like chocolate chip, snikerdoodle, oatmeal, peanut butter, red velvet, ginger molasses, maple waffle white chocolate, etc) then choose an ice cream to make an ice cream sandwich. Some of the flavor available are: strawberry and candied jalapeño, white russian, bananas foster, blood orange sorbet, spiced pumpkin pie, Eurpean yogurt & berries, and beer & pretzel.
The chocolate chip cookie with “Louis bourbon pe-Kahn pie” ice cream ($5) was pretty damn good. The cookie could have been softer and chewier to make it easier to eat, but the ice cream was rich, creamy, and delicious with small bits of pie crust and pecans. Although I didn’t detect much, if any, bourbon. The stiffness of the cookie made the ice cream shoot out the side and bottom after every bite. A softer cookie would have solved that.
It even came with an edible wrapper made out of potato, which I wasn’t a fan of. It’s a great concept but the texture and bland taste made me think I was eating paper or styrofoam. At least it cuts down on the waste.
Too bad I live so far away from this truck’s normal stomping grounds. I’d love to try more — or maybe all — flavors.
