One place I like to go for a quick weekend getaway is Big Bear, California. It’s perfect for a low-key stay with its small town charm and mom-n-pop restaurants lining the more popular avenues. Always looking for new spots to try, I headed to Broadway Cafe on my way out of town craving a burger.
It’s a small spot with not much dining inside, but there’s a patio with additional seating — perfect when the weather is nice. The food here isn’t upscale or fancy, it’s just down home, hearty, and large enough to fill up most people. The bacon blue cheese burger was overflowing with a well seasoned patty and cheese and lettuce. The bacon avocado cheese burger was equally as good with plenty of bacon and avocados topping the patty. For $9.99 you can make it a combo with a drink and fries. The chicken strips were a bit of a disappointment. They’re hand breaded, but the meat was tough and stringy.
Out in front of the restaurant, just off the side of the road was a smoker tended to by one of the owners. Chicken and brisket smoking since early morning was inside with its aroma traveling my direction. Next trip I’ll have to see if it tastes as good as it smells.
